MEXICO DESIGN MUSEUM
In the context of this dynamic city of Mexico we have explored an architectural solution which by the nature of its form already is exciting with movement and life of its own. An extruded rotating strip section rotates upon its central axis to form these dynamic spaces with a series of structure interlocking with each other. The large gallery space aims to be a place of inspiration to exhibit not only Mexican artwork but also international architects, place to enjoy art enveloped by a great architectural experience. We believe that this cathedral dedicated to the creative arts should also be a place of interaction created by a sense of place not only within the Museum but also within its landscaped grounds. We would like for this building to act as a symbol for the city.
The multilevel structure has enveloped all of the programme in these generous flexible 'naves.' Internally there will be six levels connected by a central core as well as two separate staircases. This core will contain lifts and all of the WC facilities. A separate core is planned for the basement with its own street entrances.
The ground floor will contain the entrance, reception/tickets/cloakroom , storage for art works with loading lift, auditorium, the bookshop and the largest space of the Museum - Great Gallery. This floor will lend itself to art and performance the latter flooding its viewers onto the main space of the Museum. The first floor will house the Hard Product Design gallery, offices, and cafe/restaurant. The second floor has the Architecture Gallery additional cafe/restaurant facilities and offices. The third floor will have both the Soft Product Design and Fashion galleries, in themselves disciplines which will blur the boundaries between them. A large Graphic Design Gallery will take up half of this floor. The fourth and fifth will be dedicated to all of the learning , public programme zone and research which being on the top floor will be the quietest place for this type of activity. Parking will be situated in the basement with vehicular access from Rio Lema and Rio Missisipi.
The external long semi covered 'street' parallel to Mississipi Avenue will be landscaped with hard and soft landscaping and open to the everyday passing pedestrian. In this way the city dweller is brought in to the spaces of this City Museum.
